Why Black Tungsten Carbide Rings Are A Great Modern (But Classy) Look

Why Black Tungsten Carbide Rings Are A Great Modern (But Classy) Look - Gentlemen's Bands

Black wedding bands for men have become hugely popular in the last few years, especially black tungsten carbide rings. We have many tungsten wedding bands you can choose from, but today we want to highlight one of our favorites—The Genius

This black tungsten carbide ring stands out against a stunning rose gold plated strip that conveys masculinity and style. This post will describe how black tungsten wedding bands like The Genius arrive at their rugged-yet-approachable look and feel and help you decide if this ring is the right one for you

What is Black Tungsten Carbide?

Before we talk more about The Genius, let’s unpack the details of black tungsten carbide. Tungsten carbide is one of the toughest metals on the planet. In fact, the only thing that can scratch it is a diamond. (We went into a ton of detail in an earlier post on Tungsten vs. Titanium if you want to learn even more.)

Tungsten is an extremely dense metal which makes it incredibly strong. It can withstand a tremendous amount of pressure without bending or breaking. It’s one of the metals that are perfect for guys who regularly handle rough stuff in hard-working situations.

In its natural state, it has a gray color. A little polish can transform a plain tungsten ring into a charming silver. However, turning it black requires an extra step and a lot of speed.

Jewelers create black tungsten carbide by slamming tiny particles of a black titanium alloy into the surface of the tungsten through a plating technique called Physical Vapor Deposition (or “PVD”).

Black Tungsten Carbide Rings

Wedding rings made using black tungsten carbide definitely make a statement! They aren’t your dad and granddad’s plain gold rings (not that there’s anything wrong with those if that’s the look you like). But if you’re looking for a wedding band that is rugged, unique, yet still has a “classic” vibe, you should consider black tungsten carbide.

As we mentioned above, the base metal used for these rings is super strong, much like the men who choose to wear them.

But, just like our rings’ perfectly sculpted inner curve, guys like that often have a soft, comfortable layer just beneath the surface that makes them gentle and enjoyable. We design all of our rings to have a comfortable fit that lets your ring snuggle on your finger the way you do with your manly man.

A black wedding band like The Genius would be perfect for this kind of guy! As you can see, we’ve taken the timeless look of rose gold and blended it with the modern look of black tungsten—but we didn’t stop there.

Black Hammered Tungsten Ring

We took it one step further by giving it an eye-popping hammered look!

Instead of boring smooth metal, what you end up with is a ring that has a really cool texture. Many hammered rings have a random sort of look to all of the dents and ridges the process creates. With The Genius, though, we deliver something a little different.

The shapes all around the ring create an equally sized diamond pattern, giving this ring a neat 3-D effect that shifts as light hits it from different angles.

How to Care for Black Tungsten Carbide

To keep your ring looking as good as possible, all you have to do is clean it from time to time. The process is pretty simple:

  1. Mix warm water with a couple of drops of dish detergent.
  2. Wipe the ring with a damp, soapy cloth.
  3. Scrub off dirt with a soft toothbrush if necessary.
  4. If your ring gets coated with something oily, you can use rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip to remove it.
  5. Dry it with a soft cloth.
  6. Store it in the original bag or ring box when not in use.

Some additional tips:

  • Avoid intentionally dropping or hitting your tungsten carbide ring with anything hard like a hammer or dumbbell. Tungsten doesn’t bend, but it can shatter under enough pressure, which is actually how these rings are removed in emergencies.
  • Avoid long exposure to harsh chemicals. Before swimming in a chlorine pool or getting into heavy-duty cleaning, you’ll want to store your ring somewhere else. Chemicals like chlorine, bleach, and ammonia can tarnish the surface. If you come in contact with those, just wash them off using the steps above.

If you take care of it, a ring like this will last you a lifetime (and then some!) Let us know if you have any additional questions about wedding band care and maintenance.
