Why Opals Are A Big Deal

Opal has a rich history of…well…being rich. Long ago it was highly valued because it was so rare, and it quickly became a symbol of royalty. 

Napoleon gave his sweetheart, Empress Josephine, the famous 700 carat “Burning of Troy” opal; Queen Elizabeth II has been known to have several in her collection, many of which were passed down from Queen Victoria and others.

Ancient people groups believed that opals had supernatural powers (even the ability to heal diseases) and contained lightning that fell from the sky. 

It’s not hard to imagine how they could come to that conclusion—about the lightning, that is. (There’s no medicinal value that we know of). Just stare into a good opal for a few seconds and you’ll understand why it has been called “the gemstone with fire inside.”

Types of Opal

Opals come in a variety of colors, and there are two basic types: precious and common. Their value is largely determined by the darkness of the background they’re on and how much the colors inside them “play” when light hits them. 

“Precious” opals are what we work with and what you’ll find in the inlays of most jewelry. The kind that is really impressive (and most valuable) is black opal where the colors are contrasted naturally against a black background. Napoleon was smart to choose that for his wife.

A more affordable, but no less beautiful, opal is white opal that has a light gray or white background. For the rings we create, we like to use blue opal because of how it stands out against whatever metal or wood we pair it with.

• Tungsten Opal Ring

  • The Comet – How about a ring from outside of our planet to set your wedding band apart from literally every other ring on Earth? “The Comet” is handcrafted from a chunk of meteorite that was discovered in 1906. Scientists believe it to be the oldest known meteorite ever found! We then take its cool factor one step further with a wide multi-colored opal inlay that’ll make you swear you’re staring into a far-off galaxy.
  • The Muonionulusta – (say: “moo-onion-ah-lust-ah”) – This one is named after the meteorite we just talked about. For this ring, we start with tungsten carbide and hammer it into shape giving it a really unique texture.
    • (Since tungsten is one of the toughest minerals on Earth and the meteorite was tough enough to survive the trip here, putting these elements together could be perfect for the rock of a man you’re marrying!)
    • Then, around the center, we do three inlays: two narrow bands of the meteorite on either side of a thin line of blue opal. The contrast is amazing, and it just makes you want to keep looking at it
      

• Wood Opal Ring

  • The Fire Opal – For this ring, we went with a brighter rose gold tungsten as the base. Around the middle, we added inlays of beautiful Hawaiian koa wood that frame a “river” of bright blue opal. The effect is mesmerizing and just a little tropical. (We recently highlighted “The Fire Opal” in another post, so take a look there for more detail on this one.)
  • The Turquoise – Similar to the Fire Opal, this wedding band is made from tungsten, koa wood, and opal. However, the tungsten is more of a traditional yellow gold color. We think it kind of makes the whole ring glow, and we like to give our customers plenty of variety, so why not?
