A Simple Men's Wedding Band History
As we mentioned in another post on How Wooden Rings For Men Are Making Wedding Bands Great Again, wedding rings have been around for thousands of years. The Egyptians really started the trend with rings made from woven reeds or leather, but the Romans ran with it by making metal rings a standard part of marriage ceremonies.
Throughout most of modern history, women were the primary ring-wearers. There were attempts made in the 1920s by jewelry stores to take advantage of the surge in capitalism to market men’s wedding bands along with all kinds of other clever things like rings for babies, sweet 16s, and even dinner. (”Honey, your plate is on the table, and your ring tonight is next to the fork.”)
But the Great Depression and two World Wars kind of made men focus on things other than jewelry. So it wasn’t until sometime in the 1950s that having dual wedding rings in marriage ceremonies became popular again and, eventually, the standard.
Fast forward to today, and it is noticeably unusual when you meet a husband who doesn’t wear a men's wedding bands!
Men’s Simple Wedding Bands
So let’s look at how some of the more traditional metals can be crafted into a fantastic yet simple men's wedding bands.

Yellow Gold – This is hands down the…um…gold standard (pardon the pun, it couldn’t be avoided) in men’s wedding rings. It has been for a really, really long time.
That’s because it’s an incredibly soft metal with a warm glow that is easy to come by and easy to work with. It’s the most durable type of gold; it’s hypoallergenic, and resizing is not a problem. What’s not to love?
It’s making a comeback, too! Even though it lost some popularity in the early 2000s, yellow gold is showing up more and more on men’s fingers again. Part of that is just the cycle of styles, but a lot of it may have to do with how easy yellow gold is to keep clean, its toughness, and its affordability compared to other metals that have gotten more expensive lately.
If you’re looking for a yellow gold wedding band, pay attention to how many karats it has. Pure gold is too soft to be useful in a ring, so it gets mixed with other metals to create an alloy. The higher the karat number, the purer the gold (think 24). For a ring, look for something between 14 and 18 karats to be tough enough to stand up to your manly ways yet still be good as gold.

Rose Gold – If you want a gold ring that’s slightly different from traditional yellow gold but don’t want to go too far, check out rose gold. It blends 24-karat yellow gold, copper, and sometimes silver.
The amounts of the metals determine the look and karat of the final rose gold ring. The higher the copper ratio, the more “pinkish” the ring will be. For guys, we recommend a balance that is 75% yellow gold and 25% copper.
Russian jeweler Carl Faberge was the first to use rose gold (you know, the one with the fancy eggs named after him). It has since developed a reputation as a subtle yet romantic metal that might be just the right one for you.

White Gold – This one is a mix of about 75% yellow gold and 25% silver, nickel, or zinc (if it’s an 18-karat ring). White gold is the way to go for the gentleman who likes a silver look but still wants the traditional tie to actual gold.
To further protect the gold and give it an extra shine, these rings are usually coated in another metal called rhodium. Over time, this coating can wear down, revealing more of the yellow gold beneath. But don’t let that scare you away from a great-looking ring. Getting it recoated every few years is easy, inexpensive, and can be done by any jeweler.
